ancient name of this mountain - Mikhailovskaya, comes from the name of St.
Michael's Monastery was founded here in 1108. For a long time the mountain was
almost bald, trees do not grow here. Only in 1940, commissioned by the city
hall on the hill began the creation of the park - a military engineer, developed
a beautification project Leshevsky steep slopes, masterminded the upper and
lower terraces. The upper level is located at the monastery of St Michael, the
middle was intended for the monument of Prince Vladimir, and the lower envelope
was a foot of the mountain road from the Downtown to the Hem. In 1853 the grand
opening of the magnificent monument of St. Vladimir, who baptized Rus. Since
then, Hill was named Vladimir. In 1890 the cross of the monument to St.
Vladimir reinforced a series of tubes - since every night a huge cross shone
brightly in the dark sky.

The
famous open-work gazebo on Vladimir Hill has been seen as Moscow merchant
Vasily Kokorev, millionaire oil tycoon. Impressed by the beauty of Kiev, in
1863, he donated $ 100 Kiev authorities for arranging gazebo on the cliff top
slides. Money put in the bank for temporary storage, and why we forget about

survey on the top floor of Vladimir's Hill, and the second at St. Andrew's

In 1900
h on Vladimir's Hill appeared innovation - Michael electric lift, which is now
called the funicular. The lift has become an important part of the transport
system in Kiev at the time. Tram line came straight to the front door of the
upper and lower halls funicular - passengers just five minutes from the
transplanted "horizontal" line in "inclined" to continue

In
1902, at St. Vladimir's Hill has another attraction - a round pavilion, within
which showed a panorama of "Calvary," which was a scene of Christ's
crucifixion. After a year and a half of the panorama was taken in Kiev to
Odessa and then to Kharkov, later she returned to Kiev. After the revolution,
the panorama building was dismantled and transferred to the canvas in the Kiev
Art Institute for art students.
In 1935
by decision of the Communist Party of St. Michael's Cathedral in Vladimir's
hill was destroyed. After Ukraine gained independence in January 1996 it was
decided to restore the temple. |
